Whiteboard animations for an international audience

My name’s Johanna Kroon. I live and work in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. My clients are large organisations who need compelling copy about the company strategy or about change programmes.

Before calling me, most of my clients have tried to get their ideas across using Powerpoint. But as you probably know, Powerpoints are seldom persuasive, let alone entertaining. What's worse: when 10 managers present the same Powerpoint to their teams, they will all be telling the story just a bit differently, creating maximum confusion in the process.

Whiteboard animations as shown on this website are an interesting alternative. When made properly, they are funny and engaging, and excellent conversation starters. Moreover, they will deliver the exact same message to everybody. Over the past years, I have made dozens of whiteboard animations, mainly for large organisations, in the public as well as the private sector.

However, whiteboard animations are not your one-size-fits all solution for every conceivable communication problem.

First of all, you need a big problem you want to address, or a Big Hairy Audacious Goal you wish to achieve. Of course, one can make a whiteboard animation about a companywide upgrade to the latest version of Windows, but I wouldn’t recommend it.

Let me tell you what sort of subject matter clients call me about:

    • “We are an international electronics company. Our engineers design high tech machines. However, they hate the work that comes next: standardizing their inventions. Recently, we have hired some industrial engineers to work side by side with them. It turns out that these industrial engineers are having a hard time ‘selling’ their services to the inventors. We need a compelling story that will make the inventors see the value of their new collegues.”
    • “We are an international technology company with approximately 75 million lines of code in our products. Over the years, a lot of technical debt has piled up in that code. We have recently designed a work format to clean up technical debt from the past and help prevent problems in the future. We need a story to get buy in for this way of working from our thousands of software engineers and their managers. Simultaneously, we wish to teach people how to get maximum value from the new format. Because as with all tools, there is a right way to use it and there are wrong ways to use it.“
    • “We are a public sector organization with 6,000 highly motivated employees. However, due to the bureaucracy in our organisation, many of our people suffer from a condition psychologists call learned helplessness. We have recently started a programme to reduce bureaucracy and empower our employees. How do we convince our people that we mean business and that empowerment is at all possible in our organization?”

I do not make these whiteboard animations all by myself. I write the script, after which PP Directors produces the film. The team always consists of the same people: cartoonist Lex Dirkse, Bob Kommer Soundstudio and Brandspanking for animation and special effects.

Most of our clients are from The Netherlands but increasingly, we are getting requests from abroad. Below is a showreel with some clips in English and in German. We will be happy to help you with whiteboard animations in other languages, too.
